Is there a Windows 11 Government edition?

A new Windows 11 version appeared in the wild, the Windows 11 Government Edition, but the users are asking if it’s an official build or not. The question is legitimate since there is a Windows 10 Enterprise G edition in China.

According to some comments from a Reddit post, Windows 11 Enterprise G is the equivalent Government edition of the Windows 10 version for the Chinese.

What is the Windows 11 Government Edition?

Allegedly, Windows 11 Government Edition or Windows 11 Enterprise G is a stripped-down version of Windows 11 that has no telemetry setup, no Windows Defender and it’s less bloated.

However, the users who installed this version found a lot of pinned apps, including WhatsApp and Slack which are definitely not used in China.

Is Windows 11 Government Edition legitimate?

With further research, we found that the Windows 11 Government Edition is actually a project called Enterprise G Reconstruction. It includes a guide on how to reconstruct Windows 11 with fewer features, and also lacking telemetry and Windows Defender. The installation will actually downgrade your Windows 11 Pro version to this unofficial Enterprise G version.

So, the answer is NO, Windows 11 Government Edition is not an official version of Windows 10 although the coders mimicked what Microsoft did with Windows 10 Enterprise G to comply with the Chinese requirements.

Although the users deemed this version safe to install, we wouldn’t recommend doing that. Or, if you’re a really curious advanced user, you may install it on a virtual, sandboxed environment using VMWare.

Because it’s not an official build, you will not even be able to register it and you won’t receive any updates. The lack of Windows Defender will also make it insecure in the early stages of the installation so we advise you to be extremely cautious.

So, the bottom line is that there is no official Windows 11 Government Edition OS, not even for Chinese. It’s just an experiment which you can install and use, but it’s definitely not safe to do so.

However, there is a Windows 11 Enterprise edition, so hit the highlighted link to find out more about it.
