If you ever find that Caps Lock turns off with the Shift key, it’s usually the misconfigured settings or keyboard mapping to blame. Of all the instances I have seen, there is a higher likelihood of the former. So, let’s get straight to what you should do when pressing Shift turns off Caps Lock.

What can I do if Caps Lock turns off with the Shift key?

1. Reconfigure Advanced Key Settings

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings, go to Time & language from the navigation pane, and then click on Typing.typing settings
  2. Click on Advanced keyboard settings.
  3. Click on Language bar options.
  4. Now, head to the Advanced Key Settings tab, and choose Press the CAPS LOCK key under To turn off Caps Lock.reconfigure settings if caps lock turns off with shift key
  5. Finally, click on Apply and OK to save the changes and then reboot the PC.

If you have to press Shift to turn off Caps Lock in Windows 10 or 11, your primary approach should be to check the language bar options and verify that things are correctly set. Also, if you can’t turn off Caps Lock, this is a setting you might want to look at!

Besides, in case you want to turn off Caps Lock without the Caps Lock key, set the Shift key to perform the function.

2. Remove any keyboard mapping software

If you earlier used keyboard mapping software to create a custom keyboard layout, it’s time you delete it, create a new layout, or uninstall the app altogether.

In the several instances I came across, the layout introduced a ShiftLock-like situation, which led to this unique behaviour.

3. Repair the corrupt system files

  1. Press Windows + S to open Search, type Command Prompt in the text field, and click on Run as administrator.command prompt
  2. Click Yes in the UAC prompt.
  3. Paste the following DISM commands individually and hit Enter after each:DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  4. Next, use the following command to run the SFC scan: sfc /scannowsfc scan to fix caps lock turns off with shift key
  5. Finally, reboot the PC to apply the changes.

If nothing else works, you can always repair the corrupt system files.

In case that too fails, the last option is to reset the PC. This will wipe out all the apps, configured settings, and stored data, thus ensuring that Caps Lock doesn’t turn off with the Shift key. I recommend you move critical files to external storage before the reset to avoid data loss!
